General Lee's final campaign began on March 25, 1865, with a Confederate attack on Fort Stedman, near Petersburg.
That formal declaration occurred sixteen months after Appomattox, on August 20, 1866. While this event is considered the most significant surrender of the Civil War, several other Confederate commanders had to capitulate and negotiate paroles and amnesty for Southern combatants before President Andrew Johnson could officially proclaim an end to the Civil War.
